Dear Friends,
Like all Canadians, I was alarmed and disappointed when trade talks with the United States collapsed, and by President Trump’s unjustified imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods. I am also appalled by the petty and juvenile attempt by the President to rename Lake Ontario – a name change that no Canadian will ever recognize.
My Conservative colleagues and I are ready to help. The Prime Minister must recall Parliament so that MPs can implement an economic plan to create jobs and reduce costs for Canadians. Such a plan should include repealing anti-development laws and greenlighting the more than five hundred projects currently waiting for federal approval. A plan should also encourage investment in Canada by exempting Canadian businesses from capital gains taxes if the gains are immediately reinvested in Canada. Such a plan will require legislation and Parliamentary approval.
Parliament also must be recalled for transparency and accountability. Given the conflicting reports, Canadians need to see the trade deal that both sides appeared to have agreed to, and what changes caused it to collapse in the final hours. Canadians also need to know the direct costs they will pay for Canadian counter-tariffs and the economic losses of the American tariffs. Both the costs and the solutions should be debated in Parliament.
Being home in Calgary this summer has provided an opportunity to connect with residents and attend community events. Some have asked me for my position on the upcoming referendum, and I say again that I will vote against separation. I support a stronger Alberta within a united Canada, and I will continue to stand up for Alberta in Canada’s Parliament.
