Dear Friends,
Parliament resumed for its fall session on September 21st.
During the first week back, I joined the Standing Committee on Natural Resources as a new member. Natural resources are an important part of the Canadian economy, especially in Calgary. At my first meeting, as part of a study on Canada’s electrification, electrical self-sufficiency and domestic energy security, I questioned the president and chief executive officer of WaterPower Canada about the effect of regulatory uncertainty on energy investment. She pointedly told the committee that uncertain, ambiguous and excessive regulation under the Liberal government have harmed energy investment.
Last week the government tabled Bill C-39. I spoke on this bill in the House of Commons last Thursday. I agree with the stated objective of the bill (“Build Canada Strong Act”), but remain concerned that the bill does not address the underlying problems of excessive regulation by this government. I have spent the past eleven years arguing for approval of national projects, especially pipelines. Last year the Liberal government introduced Bill C-5 (“Build Canada Act”), which I supported, which was also supposed to allow for swift project approval, yet over a year later, no major projects have been approved.
I questioned the government about its approach to project approval in question period.
In the weeks leading up to my return to Parliament, I attended many events in our neighbourhoods and across the city and met with constituents in my Calgary office.
It remains my honor to represent you in the House of Commons.
